Tasmanian Industry Crisis

CFMEU members rally at Parliament House- The Government has since responded to the Kelty Agreement CFMEU members rally at Parliament House- The Government has since responded to the Kelty Agreement
The native hardwood timber industry in Tasmania is in chaos and an industry restructure is inevitable. The Union is working to make sure that the restructure is conducted in a way which guarantees protection and a just transition for affected workers, their families and communities.

Tasmanian Ballot Result

2 September 2011

Tassie Forestry workforce overwhelmingly endorse industry restructure

Unionised forestry workers across Tasmania have overwhelmingly endorsed the recently negotiated intergovernmental agreement for the forestry industry, which arose from  “Statement of Principles” negotiated between Tasmanian environmental organisations, the industry, contractors and the CFMEU late last year.

The union has hailed the Electoral Commission managed ballot’s outcome as a courageous example of workers displaying leadership and engaging with the reality of their industries stricken state.

87% of CFMEU members who voted endorsed the Tasmanian State Government and the Federal Government agreed restructure of the industry based on the Statement of Principles.63% of members eligible to vote participated in the ballot – a high turnout for a non-compulsory union ballot.

Commenting on the outcome, CFMEU Forestry and Furnishing Products National President Jane Calvert said that the workers in the industry had showed real leadership, and that it was time for others to do the same.“The Liberal party in Tasmania continue to obstruct the process without suggesting any viable alternative strategy.” “I hope they are shamed by the leadership and maturity our members have shown, it is in stark contrast to their behaviour.”

“The Union now has a clear mandate for the course of action underway.  And frankly this ballot outcome sends a strong message to those who want to block this process, including some in industry and the environment movement, to get on board and support the intergovernmental agreement process.”

BACKGROUND

In the face of an industry crisis brought on by erratic markets, uncertain wood supply and persistent inability to attract capital investment; a crisis resulting in significant and continuing job losses, CFMEU members supported the union to take a proactive and pragmatic approach. This led the CFMEU to explore possible solutions resulting in coming to an agreement with the environment movement and employers. Generally, we do not believe that locking up forests from timber production makes social, economical or environmental sense. However, we know that consensus does not mean everyone achieves every wish, but rather that it could result in an enduring agreement which resolves everyone’s major concerns, mitigating disquiet and leading to mutually acceptable outcomes.
