The Forestry and Furnishing Products Division of the CFMEU has welcomed Forestry Minister Tony Burke’s statement to federal parliament today indicating support for the Gunns pulp mill in Tasmania and regional forest agreements as well as announcing an industry roundtable to look for ways to support the forestry industry.

CFMEU Forestry and Furnishing Products Division National Secretary Michael O’Connor said today that Minister Burke’s statement to parliament was a clear indication that the Federal Government will actively support a viable and sustainable forestry industry.

“Tony Burke has made clear that the Government supports all sections of the industry, native and plantation.”

“The statement is unambiguously pro industry and pro jobs.”

“The Minister’s announcement of an industry round table is clearly responsive to CFMEU calls for increased attention by the Federal Government to the needs of the industry.”

“In addition, the union welcomes the highlighting by Minister Burke today of the very positive role our industry can play in combating climate change.”
