A rotary veneer mill in Southern Tasmania has had a series of orders placed on it and several of its processing lines halted as a result of unsafe work areas identified by the Construction Forestry Mining and Energy Union (CFMEU) and Workplace Standards Tasmania (WST).
The Taann Rotary Veneer Mill located on the Southwood site in southern Tasmanian has been identified by the CFMEU and WST as being an unsafe workplace.

CFMEU Forestry and Furnishing Products State Secretary Scott McLean said that the site was raided by WST officers yesterday.

"Despite repeated advocacy on safety by the Union to the company, almost no action had been taken. Workers expect to go to work, do their jobs and come home to their families without accident or injury.”

“I understand that WST will be issuing orders to the Company to rectify a number of workplace safety issues as well as directing the Company to employ an Occupational Health and Safety Specialist".

"We have been contacted today by a number of workers from the site who have advised that the company has implied that should WST close the Southwood site processing lines due these unsafe areas, then they (the workforce) may be stood down without pay.   This is in direct contravention of the site Workplace Agreement and the Parent Award."

"Whilst the CFMEU supports the Forest and Wood Products Industry, we put all employers on notice that unsafe workplaces and unsafe work areas will not be tolerated by the CFMEU and we will take whatever action necessary to ensure that our members are protected in their workplaces."
